Tanya's paper, Beam engineering for selective and enhanced coupling to multipolar resonances, was chosen as an Editors' Suggestion by Physical Review B. In this paper we demonstrate tuning of multipolar light-matter interactions by engineering the illuminating beams. We derive a local field approach for calculating light scattering in inhomogenous beams, and show that the scattering spectra of spherical particles appears drastically different under different illumination conditions. We demonstrate the existence of an unusual "longitudinal" quadrupole resonance and show how to engineer light beams for selective coupling to specific multipole resonances.
