Steve received bachelor's degrees in physics and mathematics with magna cum laude honors from the University of Minnesota in 2011.
He obtained his Ph.D in the Materials program at the University of California Santa Barbara in May of 2017.
To better understand organic optoelectronic device performance (such as solar cells, or LEDs), Steve studies the connection between polymer and small molecule film morphology and the film’s three-dimensional optical structure.
Special focus is placed on anisotropic optical properties which are studied using a custom built momentum-resolved (aka Fourier imaging) spectroscopy setup. This setup is capable of measuring emitting and absorbing dipoles aligned parallel and perpendicular to the substrate, independently.
